Why Berkeley builds

UC Berkeley produces more venture-backed founders than any university in the world. We think that’s because of hustle, proximity, and collision.

The numbers don't lie. UC Berkeley produces more venture-backed founders than any university in the world. And why is that?

We believe its because of 3 reasons:

1. The hustle cutlure that exists on campus No one got here through backdoors or loopholes; it took grit, grades, and grind. Berkeley is a melting pot of first-generation students, international students, people from every background — the bottom line is that everybody worked their asses off to get here. It's created a self-reinforcing environment. You look around and everyone's doing something: building a startup, running a club, doing research, working two jobs. Mediocrity feels uncomfortable here. And there's no hand-holding. With 45,000 students, you have to seek opportunities out and make things happen yourself. That builds the exact skillset entrepreneurship demands.

2. Proximity to the biggest startup ecosystem We're 25 minutes from San Francisco and Sand Hill Road. You can grab coffee with a founder in the morning, sit in on a VC pitch in the afternoon, and make it back for your evening class. You're surrounded by people who've actually built companies, raised rounds, failed and tried again. The Silicon Valley mentality seeps into campus. "Just ship it" instead of "perfect the pitch deck." Move fast, get feedback, iterate in public.

3. Berkeley's diversity of thought We're not a homogenous student body building the same SaaS tool for tech workers. We've got engineers, poets, pre-meds and poly-sci majors, people from 100+ countries bringing completely different perspectives to the same problems. The best startup ideas come from the natural collisions of people from wildly different backgrounds. The town of Berkeley has always been about questioning everything. From the Free Speech Movement to today, this place breeds people who challenge the status quo. That same spirit that pushed back against broken systems in the '60s now drives us to challenge broken industries and reimagine markets. Private schools often optimize for the perfect founder archetype. We don't have an archetype. We have diversity that actually matters; different industries, different approaches, different ways of seeing what's broken and what's possible.

So whats our place here?

We belive that entreprenurship can't be taught in a classroom; the hunger and desire to think outside the box is innate to an individual. With so many talented individuals on campus, our job isn't to create entrepreneurs — it's to find them, put them in the same room, and wait for a spark. Builders need other Builders.

We run build sessions where things get shipped, founder dinners where you hear real stories, demo days where companies launch. Direct pipelines to what you need: investors, incubators, mentors, and co-founders.
